The Dress in the Shoebox

A Dorothy dress from The Wizard of Oz vanished from Catholic University in the 1980s. In 2021, a lecturer opened a bag on top of the faculty mailboxes and there it was.

The Dress in the Shoebox
I couldn't believe it. Inside the shoebox was the dress.

In 1973, actress Mercedes McCambridge — a close confidant of Judy Garland — gave one of Dorothy''s original blue gingham dresses from The Wizard of Oz to Father Gilbert Hartke, the legendary head of Catholic University''s drama school, as thanks for helping her through addiction. After Hartke''s death in 1986, the dress simply disappeared. Faculty searched on and off for decades. It became campus legend.

In July 2021, as staff prepared for a theater renovation, lecturer Matt Ripa noticed a bag sitting on top of the faculty mailboxes. Inside was a shoebox — and inside the shoebox was the dress. One of only four blue-and-white pinafore Dorothy dresses known to exist, and one of two retaining the original blouse, it had been on campus the entire time: unlabeled, in storage, then apparently left where anyone might have thrown it out.

Bonhams valued it at $800,000 to $1.2 million. An ownership lawsuit from Hartke''s niece halted the first auction attempt in 2022; a federal judge dismissed the claim in 2023, clearing the university''s path to sell in support of a new film acting program.

The lo.st takeaway: A million-dollar artifact spent 30+ years lost inside the building that owned it. Most "lost" items aren''t stolen — they''re unlabeled. A tag is cheaper than three decades of searching your own storage rooms.
