A wedding ring returns from the surf

Metal-detector volunteers spent hours combing a stretch of Australian coastline to recover a wedding ring lost in the waves.

A wave took the ring off a finger in shallow water. By the time anyone reached for it, it was somewhere in the sand.

Local metal-detector volunteers — who run a small lost-item recovery service for free — gridded the beach, swept it slowly, and found the ring within a few hours. They handed it back the same afternoon.

The ocean rarely gives things back on its own. Sometimes a few patient people are enough.
